Knitting: Not Just for Grannies

Knitting: Not Just for Grannies

The social knitting experience is drawing a younger crowd than ever before, according to current research:

“Industry experts claim that the percentage of female knitters under age 34 in the U.S. has more than doubled; true or not, it’s easy to find young yarn-obsessed females wherever you look.”

Why is this seemingly old-fashioned hobby making waves as the newest trend for those under 34? or under 40?

Many knitters are in it for the friendships, the encouragement, the socializing, according to this article by the Star Telegram. For some of them, it creates a reason to form a group, a place to get inspiration, and a way to further their knitting skills.

Global Movements

The newest trend among the younger knitters is that now they form communities online, not just in living rooms. Socializing and knitting have gone global.

That’s good news for us here at Chic-a. Our colorful fabrics and clever knitting totes are perfect for the “Knitting Socialite” to look fabulous at all times. (We’re a little biased, you see.)

Do you attend a knitting group? If so, how old is the average member? (We’re just curious if the research holds up!)

Thanks for stopping by!

Keep Calm

Good Knitting News from Chic-a

Chic-a Good News and Knitting; kids keep calm at school with knitting

Kids keep calm at school with knitting

Teachers are beginning to use knitting and stitching in the classroom. We have had reports of cross stitching being used to successfully change violent and disruptive behaviour in special schools. One head teacher told us “The effect is instantaneous, overwhelming calm”.

Some teachers in mainstream schools and colleges are using knitting to enable them to teach pupils with ADHD and kinesthetic learners (those who need to fiddle or tap while they take in information). Knitting appears to occupy the brain sufficiently to lessen or stop hyperactive or disruptive behaviour whilst at the same time enabling the pupil to take in information and to learn. One teacher told us “It opens up a window for learning”.

Others are using knitting groups to open up channels of communication with difficult students. These teachers report members of groups, who may have been initially aggressive towards each other, beginning to communicate and talk. They report improvements in performance in school work and social integration since taking up knitting. In addition, self esteem is raised in those who may have previuosly lived with constant criticism.

One story tells of an English Literature teacher in the 1960s who encouraged his whole class to knit while he read them the set stories and plays. The story teller told of how she remembered what he had read and was able to recall the information later. She also remembers his lessons as the most enjoyable she had.

Many others have also told us that knitting has improved their memory. It’s known that multi-sensorial events are remembered more readily, so perhaps this is an explanation. Others believe that being a bilateral exercise, knitting could be enhancing the connectivity between the right and left cerebral hemispheres, which may lead to an improvement in memory.

The bilateral movements required in knitting could also be an explanation as to why those with dyslexia and dyspraxia have found improvement in their conditions since taking up knitting. In addition they have found that knitting also helps them to organise their thought processes and have found this skill to be transferrable to other areas of life.

Knitting and stitching teach key life skills, such as PATIENCEPERSEVERENCE andCOMMUNICATION. Many stories also tell of how knitting in particular teaches that mistakes can be undone, that it’s not a catastrophic event to make a mistake and that goals can be reached despite a few detours along the way. Indeed, the end product may be considerably ‘richer’ if a bit of exploration is done on the way! They also raise self esteem, so along with the calming properties they can be extremely useful tools in the classroom.

If you’re thinking of starting up a therapeutic knitting group based in a school, please let us know. You’ll find information on starting up a social knitting group on our Groups page. When you download your free Core Pack you’ll be sent a link to our Specialist Packs. You may also like to visit Stitchlinks Plus where we are putting together a list of other possible beneficial activities which will provide your students with suggesions for a variety of skills to learn.

Knitted Together: Old and Young

Good News & Knitting

Issue 1

Chic-a Good News and Knitting: knitted-together-grannies-teach-kids-to-knit-at-schoolTime is of the Essence

The kids at this school in Glasgow are pairing up with “experienced” knitters for a positive new way for generations to spend time together. The project is aptly called “Stitch Through Time” and here, they can chat while they work on knitting squares, which are then used for creating teddy bears or blankets. They are literally getting “knitted together” (pardon the pun!).

“The project is seen as a positive way to provide a structure and a sense of purpose to older people’s week — while also giving a unique, social outlet for older and younger generations to mix together,” says the Glasgow South and Eastwood Extra.

Better Together

It is so amazing when these age groups get vitally connected, as the generation gap seems to grow larger every year. For some kids, their grandparents are far away, or are no longer around, and this offers a chance to enrich their lives with history and stories while expanding their communication skills and dexterity. For the elderly, these activities help them feel useful, keeps their minds sharp, and offers them meaningful ways to spend their days. Many older folk live on their own, and without these kind of activities, they can become very depressed and lonely, decreasing their quality of life, and shortening their life expectancy.

People of all ages benefit from knitting, we all know, and now it comes with the added benefits of the generations getting to know each other. We think its a clever pairing of these activities, with great results.

Who knew knitting could make such a difference? It’s stories like these that make us happy to be part of such a wonderful community.

How about you?

How is knitting making a difference in your life? Or in your community? We’d love to hear about your Good News & Knitting (or Crafting or Crocheting or any creative outlet)!

Happy Creating!

New on Knitty

What’s New on Knitty? This cool new shawl pattern that’s just in time for spring; keeping you warm enough for those cool breezes, yet cool enough when the sun decides to come out. And we don’t just love it because our ad is featured there. (Well, that’s part of it – if we’re honest)

The Lunatic Fringe Shawl, designed by Jennifer Dassau, features an asymmetrical design, that slowly increases the further it goes. The author of this pattern includes that she used a “slubby merino/ alpaca/ silk blend which is weirdly iridescent in duo-tonal colors, to accentuate the erratic nature of the shawl; handspun would create a similar effect. Any yarn and any amount may be used.”

If you’re tired of the boring or usual, this is just for the rebel in you!

For Your Project

If you’re keen on taking up the challenge of this fun new shawl pattern, we suggest using our ever-famous Chic-a Project Bag.(The bag that started it all…want to know more? Check out our About Us page!)

Need a place to hold your pattern and tools, too? Check out the Chic-a Triad (pictured below). It includes three handy knitting accessories (a pattern holder, mini tote and key ring pouch) in one cute little package- they all roll up into one handy clutch! Both the Triad and Project Bag come in all of our swatch colors, that are fun and ready to show off.

Knitsy: A Fun New App Review

Fun things in the Knitting World

Our Review of Knitsy: the fun, new iPad app

We love all things knitting and crochet, in fact it’s why we started Chic-a (to make knitting easier and more fun!), so we decided it would be good of us to let you know about a fun new app that we are loving right now! (Aren’t we kind?)

Knitsy.tv

has just released their new app for the iPad, and we think it’s pretty cool. (Grab your free app here!) They are now ranked at #1 on iTunes for the Free Craft and Hobby Apps.

We like things that are #1, and things that are free, so we decided to give our two cents worth.

The Knitsy Experience

After you download the app, its not as intuitive as you’d think, it actually loads into your Newsstand app. From there, you’ll have to download the issue (there’s only one currently), which takes a little time (and patience!).

Once inside, however, it is full of great pictures, a wide variety of content, and fun interaction (swipe to navigate through the pages, tap twice to see the menu).

The Knitsy Content

Kntisy is full of fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing, whether you like knitting or not. (We love the knitted stools by Claire-Anne O’Brien! And the fact that Ryan Gosling loves to knit.) There are lots of great products featured, an article on “Photo Bombing” (who knew!), and even very tasteful ads (our is on page 16! check it out, let us know what you think!)

Our Consensus

Our consensus is that this is a fun and unique magazine format, and a new way to get our reading in about Knitting and Crochet (some of our favorite subjects).

If you haven’t gotten it already, we recommend you do so!

Your Opinion Matters

Have you  tried the new Knitsy app? What do you think? Let us know in the comments and share what you’ve learned with the knitting world.

Gadget Tray Review

Chic-a Gadget Tray Review

I always love hearing how people use Chic-a’s knitting accessories, and this review by Still Life With Knitting of our newest product, the Gadget Tray, is no exception.

Here’s the review:

“I love cool little tools, so I was delighted when the lovely Joanna of Chic-a gave me a sample of this clever new product when we were at TNNA.  Called the Gadget Tray, it’s a small square of oilcloth and heavy lining fabric with snaps in the corners.  Fold up the corners and secure the snaps, and you have a handy tray/shallow basket perfect for any number of crafts.  Unsnapped, it lies perfectly flat, making it easy to store away.  The Gadget Tray is available in 3 sizes (3″, 4″, and 5″) and a number of Chic-a’s signature oilcloth prints, and the smallest size has a magnet inside which will keep needles and other small metal objects in place.

The tray came in quite handy when I was working on a beaded knitting project.  The beads were easy to access, didn’t roll all over the place, and the steel crochet hook I used stayed put in the tray thanks to the magnet”.

About the author

You can find more on her blog at: http://slwknitting.blogspot.co.uk. She has great ideas and resources for knitting (and food!). She also sells her very own (and very handy) little Stitch Markers at Knitifacts.com.

LA Yarn Crawl 2013 Teri and Joanna

LA Yarn Crawl 2013

Hi Chic-a fans!

Despite being majorly busy, I was able to attend a small part of the LA Yarn Crawl 2013 this last weekend. It was a nice break from the office, that’s for sure!

Our partner store, Wild Fiber located in sunny Santa Monica, CA, hosted the Chic-a Trunk show at the Yarn Crawl. I stopped by the store for a little visit, and when I got there, the store was very busy with lots of Crawlers and I was joyfully greeted by Teri, the owner. Seeing the Chic-a items all around the store and the fun ways they had them displayed made me nostalgic, thinking back to the very first knitting bag made by Chic-a: The Project Bag.

My favorite display at Wild Fiber was the open Yarn Keeper filled with tape measures handily found at the check out counter! I can’t say enough about how helpful and friendly the staff were at Wild Fiber. They helped my daughter pick out some fun buttons that will become earrings, and even got me to splurge on a skein of Zen Yarn Garden’s Serenity Lace in the Bumble Bee colorway. I, of course had to add the beautiful Obi Shawl pattern by Michelle Miller of Fickle Knitter Design, in order to make my purchase complete! (That’s what I’ll tell my husband, anyway.)

We spent the rest of the day in Hollywood with family, good food and a little sunshine.

The Yarn Crawl was a fun stop and I plan to attend more of the event next year! (Here’s hoping I find a few more hours in the day….)

Thanks for stopping by!

Joanna
